Decision Zone Charts are the fundamental tool used in Frontiers and Boundaries. Zone Charts portray the overall organization of authority within a company, drawing lines between zones of primary responsibility. Zone Charts are a simple way to make transparent "who has primary responsibility for what" in an organization.
The generic Zone Charts are used in the basic Frontiers and Boundaries training program to illustrate the general concepts of organizational boundaries and clarity.
Companies use the Frontiers and Boundaries Handbook to customize Zone Charts for their own internal use.
Understanding Zone Charts
The list along the left-hand side of this illustration shows types of decisions that are made in all companies, ranging from day-to-day decisions about speed of production, to equipment purchase and marketing strategy, and including major strategic choices like merger, sale and acquisition.
The list is divided into "zones." Each zone shows which decisions are the primary responsibility of an individual or group.
The Frontiers and Boundaries Handbook uses tested group-process technologies, examples, suggestions, and templates to help companies customize their own Zone Chart, and suggests ways to introduce the Zone Charts to the work force.
