Frontiers and Boundaries Handbook Mapping Decision-Making Responsibility
A step-by-step guide to clarifying who does what at employee-ownership companies
Published by Ownership Associates
Cambridge, MA
Current Release: November 18, 2003.
Excerpt: "Outcomes of Using this Handbook"
This excerpt is from Chapter 3, page 15 of the Handbook.
This Handbook is designed to provide clarity about decision-making systems and convenient tools for communicating the broad features of that decision-making system in terms of who has primary responsibility for different classes of decisions.
After a company has completed all the steps described in this Handbook, it will have accomplished the following:
- created and distributed a customized Decision Chart showing the current decision making system at that company;
- produced a statement of senior leadership commitment;
- established a Guiding Committee that can serve as a resource for further activities related to employee involvement;
- ensured opportunities for middle managers and supervisors to understand and support the process;
- created and distributed a company-specific list of decision-making principles;
- created Decision Charts describing the company’s plans for future development, its past practice, and ideal future situation; and
- delivered training for the whole company about Decision Charts and the principles behind them. (Note: this Handbook includes basic agenda points and tips for the training. Ready-to-use training is not included. See, however, below.)
An example of the results at one company that used the process described here to create its own company-specific Decision Chart is on the next page.
